If you attended a recent training seminar, or you are the meeting organizer or presenter, you may have noticed the nuances that influence our opportunities for sharing and learning. Years ago it was only the locator, which interrupted our meetings, our participants lure to slide the back of the room to address this important issue. We have evolved to the sound rings and cell phones that not only entertain, but also the necessity; of the participants are trying to achieve a series of decisions.

As with all the changes that occur, there are adjustments to make. While we prepare for our meetings – beyond the original humorous anecdote, the location of natural breaks in our content and intermittent pauses to assess and take our audience, it is now essential to examine how we guide; our participants really be present as we speak. In addition to understanding that people will be aware of our interaction with less than 10 minutes before their minds wander, now we must create a framework for diversion and the expected behaviors for the public is attention during that brief window. We must do this not only for ourselves as speakers, but for others who have devoted their time – or even money to attend our event.

Powerful Facilitation is a balance of behavior that the speaker or facilitator assigned to proactively address the potential interference that could affect a chat, conference, seminar or training. It can be as simple as working with people to develop a set of norms (conventions / rules of behavior or speech interaction) or as complex to create strategies in a complex and multi-level requires a separate facilitator. The key is finding a balance between having control of the meeting while keeping fun, exciting and safe place to ask questions and participate fully.
